Oroonoko - Theatre Play
2022
Costume Design + Scenography
Young theatre collective UMA makes a radical adaptation of the novella ‘Oroonoko’ by Aphra Behn, in which the characters confront their writer with white saviorism, misogyny and racism. They question the topic of faith: can you actually escape the life story that was written for you?
The play premiered at Oerol and toured throughout The Netherlands for two consecutive months. I had the honor to design the scenography and costumes for the play.
‘Oroonoko is a feast for the eyes.’ - NRC
‘A story told through colorful scenes and beautiful costumes.’ - De Volkskrant
‘Thanks in part to the music and colurful costumes (designed by Sjo Schütt), which fabrics and pleats strongly refer to the 17th century, Oroonoko presents grandly and immersive.’ - The Theatre Paper
